Out of Area Registration

What is Out of Area Registration?

Harwood Group Practice participates in the NHS Out of Area Registration Scheme, which allows some patients who live outside our normal practice boundary to register with, or remain registered at, the practice.

Patients may choose to register as an out-of-area patient for a variety of reasons, including convenience, continuity of care, work commitments, family connections, or a preference to remain with a healthcare team they know and trust.

Acceptance under the scheme is not automatic. Before accepting an application, the practice must be satisfied that it is clinically appropriate, safe, and practical to provide care despite the distance between the patient and the surgery.

Is Out of Area Registration Right for You?

Before applying, it is important to understand that registering with a GP practice that is not local to your home address may affect how some healthcare services are provided.

Whilst routine GP services can often be delivered without difficulty, distance can create challenges when urgent, community-based, or more complex healthcare needs arise.

You should consider whether travelling to the practice remains realistic for your circumstances, both now and in the future.

Important Things You Should Know

Home Visits

Harwood Group Practice cannot provide home visits outside our practice area.

If you become too unwell to attend the surgery, any urgent assessment or home visiting arrangements would need to be coordinated through NHS services local to your home address.

Community Services

Many NHS services are organised according to where you live rather than where your GP practice is located.

These include services such as:

  • District Nursing
  • Physiotherapy
  • Community Mental Health Services
  • Podiatry
  • Rehabilitation Services

Accessing these services may be more complicated when you are registered with a GP practice outside your local area.

Hospital Referrals

You retain the same NHS rights to choose where you receive most hospital treatment.

However, some referral pathways and services are linked to the area in which your GP practice is based, which can occasionally make arrangements more complex than for patients registered locally.

Your Responsibilities as an Out-of-Area Patient

To help us provide safe and effective care, you must:

  • Keep your contact details up to date.
  • Respond to important communications from the practice.
  • Attend appointments and reviews when required.
  • Complete any necessary monitoring for prescribed medication or long-term conditions.
  • Inform us promptly if your circumstances change.

As with all patients, repeated failure to attend appointments or engage with essential healthcare reviews may result in your registration being reviewed.

When Might We Review Your Registration?

Out-of-area registration remains appropriate only whilst the practice can safely and effectively coordinate your care.

We may review your registration if:

  • Your healthcare needs become increasingly complex.
  • You require regular home visits or community-based support.
  • Safe coordination of your care becomes difficult.
  • There is persistent non-attendance at appointments.
  • Essential reviews or monitoring are not completed.
  • We are unable to maintain effective communication with you.

Where appropriate, we will discuss any concerns with you before making a decision.

If continuing your registration is no longer considered clinically appropriate or practical, we may advise you to register with a GP practice closer to your home address.
